Prospective Undergraduate Students
Our Services
The Office of Career Management (OCM) is here to make your job search
more productive and to serve as your partner in an ongoing process of career
management and growth. We are a full-service center, meaning we provide
programs and services for our students, and host employers for interviews
and presentations. Our goal is to equip you with the skills and knowledge
necessary for a lifelong process of self-directed career management.
Career Coaching
Professional staff members are available to assist students with any
stage of the job search process from career exploration to job search
skills. Some common topics include:
- Major Exploration & Career Direction
- Self-Assessments
- Developing a Job Search Plan
- HireSmith Assistance
- Finding an Internship
- Resume & Cover Letter Advice
- Networking
- Interviewing Skills
- Evaluating & Negotiating Job Offers
- Preparing for Graduate School
Appointments are made in 30 minute blocks but you may request a one hour
appointment for tasks which require more time. To make a career coaching
appointment, please call 301-405-2301 or stop by the Office of Career
Management.
Walk-in Hours
For quick questions and brief resume reviews students are encouraged to
stop by during walk-in hours to meet with a staff member. Walk-in sessions
usually last about 10 minutes per student.
Mock Interviews
Professional staff members are available to conduct mock interviews with
students to help them sharpen their interview skills. Mock interviews are by
appointment only and generally last an hour. The first 30 minutes will
consist of a standard behavioral interview followed by 30 minutes of
feedback. OCM staff will attempt to tailor mock interviews to match the
student’s major or industry as well as the level of position you are seeking
(i.e. full-time job or internship). For this reason, we ask that all mock
interview appointments are made at least 48 hours in advance and that
students provide a copy of their resume at the time of appointment. To
schedule a mock interview, please call 301-405-2301 or stop by the Office of
Career Management.
On Campus Recruiting
Recognizing that class schedules and other responsibilities make it
difficult for most undergraduate students to travel for their career search,
the OCM hosts many business employers for on-campus presentations and
interviewing in Van Munching Hall. All employer events, on-campus
interviews, and job postings are listed on
HireSmith - the online job search database customized for students
of the Smith School of Business.
Career Resource Center
Adjacent to the OCM is the Career Resource Center which contains a wealth
of information available for students as they conduct their job search.
Print resources are organized by subject area and include information on
resume writing, interviewing, and networking skills. The Career Resource
Room is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an
occasional closing for meetings.
Educational and Curricular Programs
BMGT 367: A one-credit course that addresses building foundational job
search and career management skills as well as essential aspects of gaining
a competitive edge in today’s dynamic job market. Topics include the resume,
professional recruiting correspondence, networking, interviewing, etiquette,
and much more. You will interact with employers, MBA students, and other
professional guests for many class activities such as mock-interviewing,
networking practice, and resume reviews. This mandatory course is ideally
taken late in your sophomore year or early in your junior year.
Workshops, Panels, and Events: The OCM regularly hosts workshops focusing
on different aspects of the job search such as choosing a major, finding an
internship, or writing a resume. In addition, we also host networking events
and panels that allow students to explore fields and industries and create
contacts with business professionals.
