Professional Development Series (PDS)

The Professional Development Series (PDS) is a combination of required and optional professional development training modules for first year MBA students. This year's PDS will be held on various Fridays throughout the semester addressing writing, verbal, and professional polish skills.

            September 7 - October 12, 2007 - Professional Development Series

Career Skills
Career Consultants will prepare students to be successful job market candidates. Sessions will include creating a career marketing plan (job search materials and target companies), interview preparation, and networking.

Written Skills
The Writing Center will deliver a one-day program on effective business writing. As a result of completing this program, participants should be able to create effective business correspondence that is clear and concise; ensure complete, logically organized documents; analyze the document's audience to enable the writer to target reader's concerns; write persuasively, and use appropriate format to emphasize main ideas and make information accessible. This session replaces a former required communications class.

Presentation Skills
An OCM partner will deliver sessions on persuasive and effective oral communications.

Personal and Professional Polish
A career partner will deliver sessions on business etiquette. Areas of instruction will include networking etiquette, rules of professional behavior, and corporate dress.

Career Corporate Edge Series

Career Corporate Edge Series consists of a variety of career venues where professionals (alum and non-alum) from diverse industry sectors and functional groups provide insight and tips regarding the career search.

Fall, 2007 and Spring, 2008 - Career Corporate Edge Series

Corporate Edge Exchange
Professionals discuss trends, challenges, current events, and tips on starting a career within a particular industry sector and functional group. These sessions provide students with an excellent overview of the business world featuring expert alumni and recruiters in a tele-conference or in-house panel format:

Corporate Resume Edge
Within a small group setting, students are matched with a professional by industry or functional expertise and receive advice on how to strengthen their resumes’ marketing power!

Corporate Interview Edge
Mock behavioral and/or Case interviews are conducted by a Corporate Interviewer representing a particular industry and/or functional area. Students select mock interview time slots for one-on-one interviews followed by feedback from the interviewer.
