The Blackboard Course
Management System, located at
http://bb.rhsmith.umd.edu,
is designed to help faculty integrate Web resources into their traditional
classroom courses. We run Blackboard
Academic Suite Release 8.0. With Blackboard Instructors can allow students
to submit assignments online, gives them access to online discussion boards,
live chats, virtual meetings, and more using an easy Web interface.
This BB support website at
http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/blackboard/ can also be accessed when you
click on the " Help"
button on the top area when you are in BB course site at
http://bb.rhsmith.umd.edu.
Please
always check the Smith IT News channel when you login to Blackboard. We
post IT news and other common issues or BB related topics that you want to
be informed of.

Alert for Blackboard System Outage
Want to be notified in the event of an emergency? Campus OIT provides an
alert
system that you can get email or voice mail when Blackboard
or other selected system is down.

Directory Password Information
You need to use your Directory ID and Password
to gain access to Blackboard online course system. Please review carefully about
UM Directory Password
Information and policy.
Smith IT has similar information when you visit
http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/smithit/, then go to
Accounts under IT Support area
and check on the Password
Policy page.
Password Expiration Policy
Note
that all UM Directory passwords remain valid for up to
180 days.

Instructors: Please Request Your Course
Course
instructors are required to request their Term-based Blackboard Courses
every semester.
To request your course(s): Login to
Blackboard, go to
Faculty Resources
tab, then
Request a Course or Organization Space.
Faculty and staff member can request Non-Term-Based Courses and Organization Spaces in Blackboard as well. Visit our
Request BB Spaces web page for details.
If you are a new incoming faculty and do not have a UM Directory ID yet
to log into the campus ELMS form, please send your request to
bbhelp@rhsmith.umd.edu.

Old Course Removal
As part of regular maintenance for ELMS or UM Blackboard system,
ALL term-based courses 2 years and older will be
PERMANENTLY REMOVED from BB system during Summer (once a year).
So, Faculty, if you want to save any old course
documents, please Be Prepared! Request Master Course, save
documents to local, etc. Once the courses are purged, you will NEVER get
them back!
Please check this
document for more details to reserve your old course contents to be
used in the future.
Instructors:
When a student leaves the University, their
grade information is no longer accessible
from Blackboard. Download your Grade Center to Excel at
the end of every semester to
keep a copy
of the gradebook.

Course Availability Policy
STUDENTS: All undergraduate BB courses will be unavailable 3 Weeks
after your final exam.
You will no longer be
able to see these courses when login to Blackboard. Virtually those
accounts will then be disabled in the BB course, faculty will not be
able to communicate with students through Blackboard as well.
So, keep a copy of course materials as you go.
