The
Smith School is proud to announce the appointment of
its new dean, G. “Anand” Anandalingam, senior
associate dean and Ralph J. Tyser Professor of
Management Science. Anandalingam will succeed Howard
Frank on July 1.
“Dean Anandalingam takes over the Smith School at
a time when strong leadership and vision are needed
to implement the university’s bold new strategic
plan, which charts a course for Maryland to be one
of the world’s best universities within 10 years,”
says Nariman Farvardin, University of Maryland vice
president for academic affairs and provost. “His
expertise in the vital area of electronic markets,
his experience forming global partnerships, and his
teaching excellence will help lead the Smith School
to further success in producing graduates who
contribute to the state and the nation and who are
globally competitive.”
Anandalingam, known in the school as “Dean Anand,”
joined the Smith School in 2001 and is
well-positioned to lead and build on its
accomplishments. The school is consistently
recognized among the top internationally for its
world-class faculty conducting cutting-edge
research, its leadership in entrepreneurship and
technology, and its global focus and presence.
“I am very honored to be appointed to this role
and look forward to working with everyone in the
school and across the campus,” said Dean Anand. “As
we go forward, I could not be more committed to
utilizing our resources, location and remarkable
thought leadership to develop strong global business
leaders for sustainable innovation.”
Developing those global leaders is one of Dean
Anand’s top priorities. “Today’s business leaders
need the ability to deal with complexity and think
creatively in an environment that is marked by
diversity—of races, cultures, incomes, gender and
expectations. We will address these needs through
curriculum, through team and group work within the
school, and through practicums like global field
study trips,” he says.
Dean Anand is also excited about the opportunity
to connect with the school’s alumni, whom he counts
among the school’s chief assets, and its best
champions. He hopes to continue to build
relationships with alumni who can lend their
expertise and their passion to enrich the student
experience, and help recruit and place students in
their corporations.
