Carly Fiorina, Smith MBA '80, Named Top Woman to Watch by The Wall Street Journal

November 8, 2004

The Wall Street Journal, the world's leading business publication, today announced the results of its first global "Top 50 Women To Watch" ranking, which is designed to recognize women who have achieved noteworthy successes in business in the past year, as well as those who are poised to play important roles in business in the years to come.

The ranking includes women from the U.S., Europe and Asia, and is divided into six diverse subgroups:

  • "Running the Show"--Women who are chairwomen or chief executive officers.
  • "In Line to Lead"--Women who stand to move up in their own companies or elsewhere in the years ahead.
  • "The Inheritors"--Women who could be running the family business in the future.
  • "The Owners"--Women who run their own companies.
  • "The Watchdogs"--Women in regulatory roles.
  • "The Grant Giver"--Women with outstanding records in philanthropy.

"The time has come when we can look around the world and across industries and see women who are rising to the top of their chosen fields," said Karen Elliott House, publisher, The Wall Street Journal, and senior vice president, Dow Jones & Company. "This ranking represents those women who are making a mark. The Wall Street Journal is honored to highlight their accomplishments to its readers as a way of showing its support and endorsement of these remarkable women."

The full listings of the ranking are listed below.

2. Margaret C. Whitman, chief executive, eBay Inc.
3. Andrea Jung, chairman, Avon Products Inc.

The survey results are published in all three print editions of The Wall Street Journal (Europe, Asia and U.S.), as well as online at www.wsj.com. The Journal asked dozens of editors and reporters in bureaus around the world to nominate potential candidates, while also seeking nominations from outside. In all, a total of around 550 nominations were received.

The Journal ranked the women based on their potential to make a significant impact on business in the years ahead. The Journal considered a variety of factors, such as their influence in business and their recent accomplishments. Moreover, the Journal considered the challenges they face in business, how they're responding to those challenges, and what their decisions may mean for their companies and industries in the years ahead. Many of these women are already CEOs or top executives and will continue to be influential in their industries or in the wider business world. Others are women who are on their way up and bear watching. After much discussion and several rounds of voting among Journal editors and reporters, the list was narrowed down to the 50 finalists in the report.

Spotlight

Dargeelyn Loftin

Dargeelyn Loftin (Finance ’80, MBA ’90) is ready to hit the ground running as the newest president of Smith’s Alumni Chapter Board. Loftin was in her second year on the Alumni Chapter Board when the opportunity arose to serve as president, allowing her to marry her two loves, the University of Maryland and giving. “My hometown in North Carolina was smaller than the university; being here opened so many doors for me,” says Loftin. “Thinking about my time here always puts a smile on my face. I want to give back.”

Loftin’s education opened doors for her that she never expected. She worked for GE before starting her own consulting firm, Loftin Management Consulting Inc., which she ran for 10 years. Today she is the vice president of marketing and strategy at The Baldwin Group, a strategic change management consulting agency helping companies understand where business processes, technology and people come together. “It’s easy to come up with new plans, but harder to get people to see the value in them,” says Loftin. She would like to see more alumni become involved during the school year. “We see a lot of people who come back at homecoming, but one of the goals of Smith’s Alumni Chapter Board is to help the school create diverse and meaningful experiences to engage alumni throughout the year,” says Loftin. “I’d like alumni to be more accessible to current students. The mentoring program is a great way to help students become more effective business leaders when they graduate. Alumni events are also great opportunities to network.”
