The
University of Maryland, College Park, is a Carnegie Research-I
University, Member Association of American Universities (AAU), Flagship of
the University System of Maryland, and in Division I NCAA Athletics.
The College Park campus is approximately 1,500 acres in
Baltimore-Washington high-tech corridor.
Dr. C.D. Mote, Jr. was named president of the University of Maryland in
fall 1998. Mote comes from a successful career as a research engineer and
top administrator at the University of California, Berkeley.
The university generates $5.93 of economic activity for every dollar
appropriated by the General Assembly, providing a statewide impact of nearly
$1.8 billion annually.
Research awards to the University of Maryland, College Park surged to an
all-time high of
$407 million during the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2007. This is
$57 million more than last year's total of $350 million in sponsored
research.
