Social Interactions and the "Digital Divide": Explaining Variations in Internet Use
Agarwal, Ritu, Animesh Animesh, K. Prasad
Abstract: Given the increasingly important role of the Internet in education, healthcare, and other essential services, it is important that we develop an understanding of the "digital divide". Despite the widespread diffusion of the Web and related technologies, pockets remain where the Internet is used sparingly, if at all. There are large geographic variations, as well as variation across ethnic and racial lines. Prior research suggests that individual, household, and regional differences are responsible for this disparity. We argue for an alternative explanation: that individual choice is subject to social influence ("peer effects") that emanates from geographic proximity, and that this influence is the cause of the excess variation. We test this assertion with empirical analysis of a data set compiled from a number of sources. We find, first, that widespread Internet use among people who live in close proximity has a direct effect on an individual's propensity to go online. Using data on residential segregation, we test the proposition that Internet usage patterns of people who live in more ethnically isolated regions will more closely resemble usage patterns of their ethnic group. Finally, we examine the moderating impact of housing density and directly measured social interactions on the relationship between Internet use and peer effects. Results are consistent across analyses and provide strong evidence of peer effects, suggesting that individual Internet use is influenced by local patterns of usage. Implications for public policy and the diffusion of the Internet are discussed.

Adoption of Electronic Health Records in the Presence of Privacy Concerns: The Elaboration Likelihood Model and Individual Persuasion
Agarwal, Ritu, Corey Angst
Abstract: Within the emerging context of the digitization of health care, electronic health records (EHRs) constitute a significant technological advance in the way medical information is stored, communicated, and processed by the multiple parties involved in health care delivery. However, in spite of the anticipated value potential of this technology, there is widespread concern that privacy issues may impede its diffusion. In this study, we pose the question: can individuals be persuaded to change their attitudes and opt-in behavioral intentions towards EHRs, and allow their medical information to be digitized even in the presence of significant privacy concerns? To investigate this question, we integrate an individual's concern for information privacy (CFIP) with the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to examine attitude change and likelihood of opting-in to an EHR system. We theorize that issue involvement and argument framing interact to influence attitude change, and that concern for information privacy further moderates the effects of these variables. We also propose that likelihood of adoption is driven by concern for information privacy and attitude. We test our predictions using an experiment with 366 subjects where we manipulate the framing of the arguments supporting EHRs provided to the subjects. We find that an individual's CFIP interacts with argument framing and issue involvement to affect attitudes toward the use of EHRs. In addition, results suggest that attitude towards EHR use and CFIP directly influence opt-in behavior. Finally, an important finding for both theory and practice is that even when people have high concerns for privacy, their attitudes can be positively altered with appropriate message framing. These findings, as well as other theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

The Information Systems Identity Crisis: Focusing on High-Visibility and High-Impact Research
Agarwal, Ritu, Henry C. LucasMIS Quarterly September 2005, Vol. 29, No. 3, pp. 381-398
Abstract: This paper presents an alternative view of the Information Systems identity crisis described recently by Benbasat and Zmud (2003). We agree with many of their observations, but we are concerned with their prescription for IS research. We critique their discussion of errors of inclusion and exclusion in IS research and highlight the potential misinterpretations that are possible from a literal reading of their comments. Our conclusion is that following Benbasat and Zmud's nomological net will result in a micro focus for IS research. The results of such a focus are potentially dangerous for the field. They could result in the elimination of IS from many academic programs. We present an alternative set of heuristics that can be used to assess what lies within the domain of IS scholarship. We argue that the IS community has a powerful story to tell about the transformational impact of information technology. We believe that a significant portion of our research should be macro studies of the impact of IT. It is important for academic colleagues, deans, and managers to understand the transformational power of the technology. As IS researchers with deep knowledge of the underlying artifact, we are best positioned to do such research.

Practicing Safe Computing: A Multi-Method Empirical Examination of Home Computer User Security Intentions
Anderson, Catherine, Ritu Agarwal
Abstract: Although firms are expending substantial resources to develop technology and processes that can help safeguard the security of their computing assets, increased attention is being focused on the role people play in maintaining a safe computing environment. Unlike employees in a work setting, home users are not subject to training, nor are they protected by a technical staff dedicated to keeping security software and hardware current. Thus, with over one billion people with access to the Internet, individual home computer users represent a significant point of weakness in achieving the security of the cyber infrastructure. We study the phenomenon of conscientious cybercitizens, defined as individuals who are motivated to take the necessary precautions under their direct control to secure their own computer and the Internet in a home setting. Using a multidisciplinary, phased approach, we develop a conceptual model of the conscientious cybercitizen. We present results from two studies: a survey and an experiment, conducted to understand the drivers of security intentions, and the interventions that can positively influence these drivers. In Study 1, we use protection motivation theory as the underlying conceptual foundation and extend the theory by drawing upon the public goods literature and the concept of psychological ownership. Results from a survey of 594 home computer users from a wide range of demographic and socio-economic backgrounds suggest that a home computer user's security intentions are formed by a combination of cognitive, social, and psychological components. In Study 2, we draw upon the concepts of goal framing and self-view to examine how the proximal drivers of security intentions identified in Study 1 can be influenced by appropriate messaging. An experiment with 101 subjects is used to test the research hypotheses. Overall, the two studies shed important new light on creating more conscientious cybercitizens. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Competing "Creatively" in Sponsored Search Markets: The Effect of Rank, Differentiation Strategy, and Competition on Performance
Animesh, Animesh, Siva Viswanathan, Ritu Agarwal
Abstract: Although the efficiency-enhancing features of online markets have been well studied, much less is known about firms' differentiation strategies in these competitive markets, or the outcomes of such differentiation. This study examines competition among firms in online sponsored search markets - one of the fastest growing and most competitive of online markets. Given the nascence of online sponsored search and the lack of sophisticated differentiation strategies, firms have primarily sought to be listed on top of the search results, leading to intense competition. With the rapid evolution of sponsored search markets from simple auctions to sophisticated forums for customer acquisition, the need to go beyond a myopic focus on competing for the top slots and seek effective differentiation strategies is becoming clear. In this paper we develop and test a model that predicts the click through rate (CTR) of a seller's listing in a sponsored search setting. Drawing upon consumer search theory and competitive positioning strategies we theorize that the CTR is jointly driven by the seller's positioning strategy as reflected by the unique selling proposition (USP) in its "ad-creative," by its rank in the sponsored search listing, and the nature of competition around the focal seller's listing. We use data from a field experiment conducted by a leading firm in the mortgage industry where the firm varied its rank and USP dynamically. Results suggest that sponsored search listings can act as an effective customer segmentation mechanism, consistent with a model of consumer search in directional markets. We further find that the effect of the firm's positioning strategy and its rank in the listing on CTR is strongly moderated by its ability to differentiate itself from adjacent rivals. We discuss the implications of our findings for sellers' strategies in sponsored search markets and for extending understanding of consumer search behavior in directional markets.

The Impact of IT Investment on Product Innovation: Theory and Evidence from the Pharmaceutical Industry
Bailey, Joseph, David Cantor, Curtis GrimmWorking Paper
Abstract: In this paper we investigate the impact of information technology investment on product innovation. We use a Schumpeterian economics framework to develop a model of IT investment as a determinant of innovation, thereby extending the work of Sambamurthy et al. (2003). From this theoretical foundation, we develop and test five hypotheses to determine the direct and contextual effects of information technology investment on product innovation. We then test the theory with an original data set drawn from the pharmaceutical industry. Using Poisson regression models, we find statistical support for four of the five hypotheses. A key finding is that investing in information technology has a positive effect on innovation. Moreover, this effect grows stronger as firm size increases, suggesting that investment in information technology may be an antidote to problems of bureaucracy. Surprisingly, the impact of information technology grows weaker as market concentration increases, suggesting that IT may exacerbate problems of complacency.

The Impact of E-Commerce on Competition in the Retail Brokerage Industry
Bakos, Yannis, Henry C. Lucas, Wonseok Oh, Gary Simon, Siva Viswanathan, Bruce W. WeberInformation Systems Research December 2005, Vol. 16, No. 4, pp. 352-371
Abstract: This paper analyzes the impact of e-commerce on markets where established firms face competition from Internet-based entrants with focused offerings. In particular, we study the retail brokerage sector where the growth of online brokerages and the availability of alternate sources of information and research services have challenged the dominance of traditional brokerages. We develop a stylized game-theoretic model to analyze the impact of competition between an incumbent full-service brokerage firm with a bundled offering of research services and trade execution and an online entrant offering just trade execution. We find that as consumers' willingness to pay for research declines, the incumbent finds it optimal to unbundle its offering when competing with the online entrant. We also find that the online entrant chooses a lower quality of trade execution when faced with direct competition from the incumbent's unbundled offering. The analytical model motivates a unique field experiment placing actual simultaneous trades with traditional full-service and online brokers, to compare order handling practices and the quality of trade execution. In keeping with our analytical results, our empirical findings show a significant difference in the quality of execution between online brokerages and their full-service counterparts. We discuss the relevance of our findings for quality differentiation, price convergence, and profit decline in a variety of markets where traditional incumbents are faced with changes in the competitive landscape as a result of e-commerce.

Abstract: Large scale disasters bring together a diversity of organizations and produce massive amounts of heterogeneous data that must be managed by these organizations. The lack of effective information and communication technology (ICT) solutions can lead to a lack of coordination and chaos among these organizations, as they track victims' needs and respond to the disaster. The result can be delayed or ineffective response, the potential wastage of pledged support, imbalances in aid distribution, and a lack of transparency. ICT solutions to manage disasters can potentially improve efficiency and effectiveness. Sahana is a Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) application that aims to be a comprehensive solution for information management in relief operations, recovery and rehabilitation. This paper addresses the alignment between FOSS development and humanitarian applications. It then describes the anatomy of the Sahana system. We follow up with a case study of Sahana deployment and lessons learned.

Arc-Routing Models for Small-Package Local Routing
Chen, Si, Bruce Golden, Richard Wong, Hongsheng Zhong
Abstract: This paper studies the arc-routing problem that arises in small-package delivery. In practice, each service provider is encouraged to follow a master route-a predesigned sequence of street addresses-over an extended planning horizon (more than one day). The objective here is to construct efficient master routes. The focus on arc routing offers two advantages. First, real-world vehicle routing takes place over a street network, rather than in Euclidean space. Second, there are, typically, many fewer streets than customer locations. Currently, a deterministic arc-routing problem (DARP) model is used to solve the problem. However, this approach ignores the uncertainty in the street segment presence probability-the probability that a street segment requires (i.e., there is a demand for) a visit on a particular day. We introduce two new models, namely, the probabilistic arc-routing problem (PARP) model and the multiday arc-routing problem (MARP) model, which take into account the street segment presence probabilities. PARP attempts to minimize the expected length of the master route. It assumes that the street segment presence probabilities are independent. This model can require excessive amounts of computation time. On the other hand, MARP tries to minimize average length of the master route over prespecified days. This model can also be viewed as a Monte Carlo simulation approximation of the PARP. This approximation significantly reduces the computational burden. Additionally, by utilizing historical data, MARP incorporates real-world correlations among the street segment presence probabilities. Our computational results show that PARP and MARP may produce more efficient master routes than DARP by taking demand uncertainty into account.

Strategic Manipulation of Internet Opinion Forums: Implications for Consumers and Firms
Dellarocas, ChrisManagement Science Vol. 52, No. 10, October 2006
Abstract: There is growing evidence that consumers are influenced by Internet-based opinion forums before making a variety of purchase decisions. Firms whose products are being discussed in such forums are therefore tempted to manipulate consumer perceptions by posting costly anonymous messages that praise their products. This paper offers a theoretical analysis of the impact of such behavior on firm profits and consumer surplus. There are three main results. First, if every firm's manipulation strategy is a monotonically increasing (decreasing) function of that firm's true quality, strategic manipulation of online forums increases (decreases) the information value of a forum to consumers. This result implies the existence of settings where online forum manipulation benefits consumers. Second, equilibria where strategies are monotonically increasing (decreasing) functions of a firm's true quality exist in settings where the firm's net payoff function, inclusive of the cost of manipulation, is supermodular (submodular) in the firm's quality and manipulation action. Third, in a broad class of settings, if the precision of honest consumer opinions that firms manipulate is sufficiently high, firms of all types, as well as society, would be strictly better off if manipulation of online forums was not possible. Nonetheless, firms are locked into a "rat race" and forced to spend resources on such profit-reducing activities; if they don't, consumer perceptions will be biased against them. The social cost of online manipulation can be reduced by developing "filtering" technologies that make it costlier for firms to manipulate. Interestingly, as the amount of user-contributed online content increases, it is firms, and not consumers, that have most to gain from the development of such technologies.

The Sound of Silence in Online Feedback: Estimating Trading Risks in the Presence of Reporting Bias
Dellarocas, Chris, Charles WoodManagement Science Vol. 54, No. 3, March 2008, pp. 460–476
Abstract: Most online feedback mechanisms rely on voluntary reporting of privately observed outcomes. This introduces the potential for reporting bias, a situation where traders exhibit different propensities to report different outcome types to the system. Unless properly accounted for, reporting bias may severely distort the distribution of public feedback relative to the underlying distribution of private transaction outcomes and, thus, hamper the reliability of feedback mechanisms. This study offers a method that allows users of feedback mechanisms where both partners of a bilateral exchange are allowed to report their satisfaction to "see through" the distortions introduced by reporting bias and derive unbiased estimates of the underlying distribution of privately observed outcomes. A key aspect of our method lies in extracting information from the number of transactions where one or both trading partners choose to remain silent. We apply our method to a large data set of eBay feedback. Our results support the widespread belief that eBay traders are more likely to post feedback when satisfied than when dissatisfied and are consistent with the presence of positive and negative reciprocation among eBay traders. Most importantly, our analysis derives unbiased estimates of the risks that are associated with trading on eBay that, we believe, are more realistic than those suggested by a naïve interpretation of the unusually high (>99%) levels of positive feedback currently found on that system.

Exploring the Value of Online Product Reviews in Forecasting Sales: The Case of Motion Pictures
Dellarocas, Chris, Xiaoquan (Michael) Zhang, Neveen F. AwadJournal of Interactive Marketing Vol. 21, No. 4, Autumn 2007
Abstract: The growing popularity of online product review forums invites the development of models and metrics that allow firms to harness these new sources of information for decision support. Our work contributes in this direction by proposing a novel family of diffusion models that capture some of the unique aspects of the entertainment industry and testing their performance in the context of very early postrelease motion picture revenue forecasting. We show that the addition of online product review metrics to a benchmark model that includes prerelease marketing, theater availability and professional critic reviews substantially increases its forecasting accuracy; the forecasting accuracy of our best model outperforms that of several previously published models. In addition to its contributions in diffusion theory, our study reconciles some inconsistencies among previous studies with respect to what online review metrics are statistically significant in forecasting entertainment good sales.

CMM Certification in Indian ITS Offshoring Industry
Gao, Guodong, Anand GopalM&SOM Forthcoming
Abstract: Third-party process certification programs such as the ISO 9001 have been popular in the manufacturing sector as a means of differentiation and quality assurance. However, little work exists studying the relevance of these programs in the services sector, specifically in IT services. In this study, we study the Capability Maturity Model (CMM), a popular process standard used in the IT services industry. We use three competing theoretical frameworks in analyzing the motivations for a firm to acquire CMM certification and the performance implications thereafter - signaling, efficiency gains and institutional theory. We test these hypotheses in the context of the Indian offshore IT services industry using panel data on 66 vendor firms collected between 1997 and 2002. Our results indicate that more cost-effective firms and export-oriented firms are more likely to acquire certification. In addition, CMM-certified firms show significant improvements in exports but not on the firm's cost structure. Further, our finding suggest that CMM certification helps indicate firm capabilities to potential customers, and thus appear to be consistent with signaling explanations of certification rather than the efficiency gains or institutional theories.

When Online Review Meets Hyperdifferentiation: a Study of Craft Beer Industry
Gao, Guodong, Eric Clemons, Lorin HittJournal of Management Information Systems Fall 2006
Abstract: We analyze how online reviews can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of product differentiation strategies based on the theories of hyperdifferentiation and resonance marketing. Hyperdifferentiation says that firms can now produce almost anything that will appeal to consumers and that they can manage the complexity of the increasingly diverse product portfolios that result. Resonance marketing says that informed consumers will only purchase products that they actually truly want. When consumers become more informed, firms that provide highly differentiated products should experience higher growth rates than firms with less differentiated offerings. We construct measures of product positioning based on online ratings and find supportive evidence using data on sales in the craft beer industry. In particular, we find that the variance of ratings and the strength of the most positive quartile of reviews play a significant role in determining which new products grow fastest in the marketplace. This supports our expectations for resonance marketing.

IT and Product Variety: Evidence from Panel Data
Gao, Guodong, Lorin HittManagement Science Under Review
Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between information technology (IT) and product variety. It has long been suggested that IT provides a platform for innovation, and technologies such as computer-aided design and flexible manufacturing systems have enabled firms to offer greater variety at a reasonable cost. Using a novel approach to measuring product variety through trademark counts, we provide the first large-sample evidence on the relationship between IT and product variety at the firm level. Using an 11-year panel data set (1987-1997) of information technology capital stock, trademark holdings, and other measures for 184 Fortune 1000 manufacturing firms, we find that IT is significantly associated with greater product variety and increased new product introductions.

Certification in the Indian Offshore Services Industry
Gopal, Anand, G. GaoManufacturing and Services Operations Management Forthcoming

Abstract:
On Vendor Preferences for Contract Types in Offshore Software Projects: The Case of Fixed Price versus Time and Materials Contracts
Gopal, Anand, K. SivaramakrishnanInformation Systems Research
Abstract: Prior research has indicated that on average, offshore vendors have higher profits associated with Time and Materials (T&M) contracts than Fixed Price (FP) contracts. This research raises two questions. First, is the relative importance of various profit drivers different across two contractual regimes? Second, does it follow that vendors unconditionally prefer T&M contracts for all projects? We address these questions by using data on 93 offshore projects completed by a leading Indian vendor. We employ an endogenous switching regression framework and the program evaluation methodology to show that profit equations are distinctly different for the two contractual regimes. Using these two profit equations, we are also able to identify contingencies under which the vendor prefers a FP contract to a T&M contract. We hypothesize that the vendor's ability leverage information asymmetry about capabilities and experiences translates into the vendor preferring FP contract to secure larger information rents. Our results support this hypothesis and suggest that the vendor would prefer the FP contract for larger and longer projects with larger teams. However, vendors would prefer a T&M contract when the risk of employee attrition from the project team is high. In addition, we discuss managerial implications of these results in the paper.

The Role of Organizational Controls and Boundary Spanning in Software Development Outsourcing: Implications for Project Performance
Gopal, Anand, S. GosainInformation Systems Research Forthcoming
Abstract: Past research has studied how the selection and use of control portfolios in software projects is based on environmental and task characteristics. However, little research has examined the consequences of control mode choices on project performance. This paper reports on a study that addresses this issue in the context of outsourced software projects. In addition, we propose that boundary spanning activities between the vendor and the client enable knowledge sharing across organizational and knowledge domain boundaries. This is expected to lead to facilitation of control through specific incentives and performance norms that are suited to client needs as well as the vendor context. Therefore, we argue that boundary spanning between the vendor and client moderates the relationship between formal controls instituted by the vendor on the development team and project performance. We also hypothesize the effect of collaboration as a clan control on project performance. We examine project performance in terms of software quality and project efficiency. The research model is empirically tested in the Indian software industry setting on a sample of 96 projects. The results suggest that formal and informal control modes have a significant impact on software project outcomes, but need to be finely tuned and directed toward appropriate objectives. In addition, boundary-spanning activities significantly improve the effectiveness of formal controls. Finally, we find that collaborative culture has provides mixed benefits by enhancing quality but reducing efficiency.

The Consistent Vehicle Routing Problem
Gröer, Chris, Bruce Golden, Edward Wasil
Abstract: In the small package shipping industry (as in other industries), companies try to differentiate themselves by providing high levels of customer service. This can be accomplished in several ways, including online tracking of packages, ensuring on-time delivery, and offering residential pick ups. Some companies want their drivers to develop relationships with customers on a route and have the same drivers visit the same customers at roughly the same time on each day that the customers need service. These service requirements, together with traditional constraints on vehicle capacity and route length, define a variant of the classical capacitated vehicle routing problem, which we call the consistent VRP (ConVRP). In this paper, we formulate the problem as a mixed-integer program and develop an algorithm to solve the ConVRP that is based on the record-to-record travel algorithm. We compare the performance of our algorithm to the optimal mixed-integer program solutions for a set of small problems and then apply our algorithm to five simulated data sets with 1,000 customers and a real-world data set with more than 3,700 customers. We provide a technique for generating ConVRP benchmark problems from vehicle routing problem instances given in the literature and provide our solutions to these instances. The solutions produced by our algorithm on all problems do a very good job of meeting customer service objectives with routes that have a low total travel time.

Measuring the Frictional Costs of Online Transactions: The Case of a Name-Your-Own-Price Channel
Hann, Il-Horn, Christian TerwieschManagement Science Vol. 49, No. 11, November 2003, pp. 1563-1579
Abstract: We study the offers submitted by consumers to a large Name-Your-Own-Price (NYOP) online retailer. A distinctive feature of this retailer is that it allows consumers to repeatedly submit offers on one and the same product. While consumers could identify the threshold price (the minimum price for which the retailer is willing to sell) by incrementing their offer in small steps in each consecutive round, such a strategy would require them to go through many additional online transactions. We define frictional cost as the disutility that the consumer experiences when conducting an online transaction, such as submitting an offer. Thus, in our setting, consumers trade off a direct financial value (lower price) for frictional costs. Based on a consumer choice model capturing this trade-off, we use the observed consumer behavior to reconstruct the frictional cost parameters for the consumers in our sample. We show that, perhaps contrary to the general wisdom, frictional costs in electronic markets are substantial, with median values ranging from 3.54 Euro for a portable digital music player (MP3) to 6.08 Euro for a personal digital assistant (PDA). We find that consumers who have gathered experience with the NYOP channel in previous transactions exhibit lower frictional costs than consumers who use the channel for the first time. Surprisingly, sociodemographic variables do not help to explain the variation in frictional costs.

Hann, Il-Horn, Kai-Lung Hui, Tom S. Lee, I.P.L. PngManagement Science Vol. 54, No. 6, June 2008, pp. 1094-1103
Abstract: We introduce the concept of "marketing avoidance" - consumer efforts to conceal themselves and to deflect marketing. The setting is one where sellers market some item through solicitations to potential consumers, who differ in their benefit from the item and suffer harm from receiving solicitations. Concealment by one consumer induces sellers to shift solicitations to other consumers, while deflection does not. Solicitations cause two externalities: direct harm on consumers, and the (indirect) cost of consumer concealment and deflection. We find that in markets where the marginal cost of solicitation is sufficiently low, efforts by low-benefit consumers to conceal themselves will increase the cost-effectiveness of solicitations and lead sellers to market more. However, concealment by high-benefit consumers leads sellers to market less. Further, concealment by low-benefit consumers increases direct privacy harm, and consumer welfare is higher with deflection than concealment. Finally, it is optimal to impose a charge on solicitations.

Seller Search and Market Outcomes in Online Auctions
Kuruzovich, Jason, Siva Viswanathan, Ritu Agarwal
Abstract: Sellers use online auctions to search for buyers whose product preferences and valuations match the sellers' offerings. Although prior research has examined the drivers and outcomes of buyers' online search behaviors, limited work has addressed the search strategies used by sellers. In this study, we investigate how sellers online search behavior is influenced by factors outside of the individual auction - including prior auctions for the same unique item, online auction market characteristics, and indicators of the likelihood of sale in other channels. The online auction market for used vehicles, where the reserve price is met and a sale occurs in fewer than 25% of auctions, provides an opportunity to observe sellers' search behaviors. The unique VIN associated with each vehicle enables the tracking of an individual item across both subsequent auctions and across different channels. Empirical analysis of a large data set of over 60,000 auctions provides insights into factors that influence sellers' search for high-valuation buyers and how sellers' search behaviors influence the final sale price obtained. Overall, we find that the duration of search in the auction channel is associated with higher revenues, with on average a one standard deviation increase in duration of search (~1 week) resulting in a $687 increase in the sale price.

Lee, Woei-Jyh, Louiqa Raschid, Hassan Sayyadi, Padmini SrinivasanProceedings of the 2008 International Conference on Data Integration in the Life Sciences
Abstract: There is significant knowledge captured through annotations on the life sciences Web. In past research, we developed a methodology of support and confidence metrics from association rule mining, to mine the association bridge of termlinks between pairs of controlled vocabulary (CV) terms across two ontologies. Our (naive) approach did not exploit the following: implicit knowledge captured via the hierarchical is-a structure of ontologies, and patterns of annotation in datasets that may impact the distribution of parent/child or sibling CV terms. In this research, we consider this knowledge. We aggregate termlinks over the siblings of a parent CV term and use them as additional evidence to boost support and confidence scores in the associations of the parent CV term. A weight factor reflects the contribution from the child CV terms; its value can be varied to reflect a variance of confidence values among the sibling CV terms of some parent CV term. We illustrate the benefits of exploiting this knowledge through experimental evaluation. [Winner of the Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics Best Paper award]

Online Peer to Peer Lending: The Value of Social Networks
Lin, Mingfeng, N. R. Prabhala, Siva Viswanathan
Abstract: Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, where individual lenders provide unsecured loans directly to individual borrowers without the intermediation of financial institutions, has experienced rapid growth in recent years. One defining feature of this new financial market is the role of social networks, which could provide important information about borrowers and potentially help mitigate risk. This study examines how network metrics and member roles affect transactional outcomes in this market; and, more importantly, whether such credit-worthiness is supported ex post through loan performance data. We find that: (1) Soft credit information, or the riskiness of the borrower conveyed through their roles and positions in the network, has a non-negligible effect at all stages of a loan (being funded; the interest rate of the loan; and ex post performance of loans), (2) Network ties have a significant impact on the probability of a loan being funded, the interest rate for borrowers, as well as the ex post performance of the loan, and (3) "Cheap signals" are marginally effective but are outweighed by verifiable actions. Our findings highlight how leveraging soft information embedded in social networks is critical for the success of online P2P lending markets.

Information Technology and Firm Profitability: Mechanisms and Empirical Evidence
Mithas, Sunil, A.R. Tafti, I.R. Bardhan, J.M. GohWorking Paper
Abstract: Do information technology (IT) investments improve firm profitability? If so, is it on account of improvement in sales or is it on account of reduction in overall operating expenses? How does the effect of IT on profitability compare with that of advertising and R&D? The empirical evidence in this paper, using archival data for the 1998-2003 period for more than 400 global firms, suggests that IT has a positive impact on profitability, thus resolving what Dedrick, Gurbaxani and Kraemer (2003) have characterized as "the profitability paradox" of IT. Importantly, the effect of IT investments on sales and profitability is higher than that of other discretionary investments such as advertising and R&D expenditures. We also find that a significant portion of IT's impact on firm profitability is accounted for by IT-enabled revenue growth, but we do not find evidence for the effect of IT on profitability through operating cost reduction. Taken together, these findings suggest that firms have had greater success in achieving higher profitability through IT-enabled revenue growth than through IT-enabled cost reduction. They also provide important implications for managers to make allocations among discretionary expenditures such as IT, advertising, and R&D. With regard to IT expenditures, the results imply that firms should accord higher priority to IT projects that have revenue growth potential over those that focus mainly on cost savings. Does High-skill Immigration Make Everyone Better Off? United States' Visa Policies and Compensation of American and Foreign Information Technology Professionals
Mithas, Sunil, H.C. LucasWorking Paper
Abstract: The use of H-1B and other work visas to hire foreign information technology (IT) professionals has attracted significant controversy and policy debates. On one hand, hiring high-skill foreign IT professionals on work visas can be advantageous for firms and overall economy. On the other hand, high-skill immigration can impact wages of foreign and American IT professionals adversely. This study uses data on skills and compensation of more than 50,000 IT professionals in the U.S. over the period 2000-2005 to study patterns in compensation of foreign and American IT professionals to inform these debates. Contrary to the popular belief that foreign workers are a cheap source of labor for firms, we find that after controlling for their human capital attributes, foreign IT professionals (those without a U.S. citizenship and those with H-1B or other work visas) earn a salary premium when compared with IT professionals with U.S. citizenship. The salary premiums for non-U.S. citizens and for those on work visas fluctuate in response to supply shocks created by the annual caps on new H-1B visas. Setting lower and fully utilized annual caps results in higher salary premiums for non-U.S. citizens and those with a work visa. The study also investigates differential returns to education and experience based on citizenship and visa status, and the results suggest that returns on education are higher for U.S. citizens and returns on IT experience are higher for non-U.S. citizens. While firms pay a premium for IT experience at other firms (in comparison to IT experience at the current firm) to U.S. citizens; firms appear not to value IT experience at other firms of non- U.S. citizens. We discuss implications of this study for crafting informed visa and immigration related policies by the U.S. government and for human capital investments by IT professionals.
Is the World Flat or Spiky? Information Intensity, Skills, and Global Service Disaggregation
Mithas, Sunil, J. WhitakerInformation Systems Research (18:3) 2007, pp. 237-259
Abstract: Which service occupations are the most susceptible to global disaggregation? What are the factors and mechanisms that make service occupations amenable to global disaggregation? This research addresses these questions by building on previous work by Apte and Mason (1995) and Rai, Patnayakuni, and Seth (2006) that focuses on the unbundling of information and physical flows. We propose a theory of service disaggregation and argue that high information intensity makes an occupation more amenable for disaggregation because the activities in such occupations can be codified, standardized, and modularized. We empirically validate our theoretical model using data on more than 300 service occupations. We find that at the mean level of skill, the information intensity of an occupation is positively associated with the disaggregation potential of that occupation, and the effect of information intensity on disaggregation potential is mediated by the modularizability of an occupation. We also find that skills moderate the effect of information intensity on service disaggregation. Furthermore, we study the patterns in U.S. employment and salary growth from 2000 to 2004. Contrary to popular perception, we do not find any adverse effect in terms of employment growth or salary growth for high-information-intensity occupations at the mean level of skill. Our findings show that high-skill occupations have experienced higher employment and salary growth than low-skill occupations at the mean level of information intensity. Notably, high-information-intensity occupations that require higher skill levels have experienced higher employment growth, though this employment growth is accompanied by a decline in salary growth. Occupations with a higher need for physical presence have also experienced higher employment growth and lower salary growth. Overall, these results imply that firms and managers need to consider the modularizability of occupations as they reallocate global resources to pursue cost and innovation opportunities. For individual workers, our results highlight the importance of continuous investments in human capital and skill acquisition because high-information-intensity and high-skill occupations appear to be relatively less vulnerable to global disaggregation. Abstract: This paper studies the influence of supply-side and demand-side factors on the compensation of information technology (IT) professionals and considers the human capital and institutional explanations. We focus on returns to an MBA and the IT-related experience of IT professionals and use the largest data set of IT professionals that has been compiled to date in the United States to answer our research questions. We find that firms pay a significant premium for an MBA. Although firms value the IT experience of IT professionals, they value an MBA significantly more. The results of this study cast doubt on the belief that IT skills have a large firm-specific component. While IT experience is valued more than non-IT experience for IT professionals, firms value IT experience at other firms much more than they value firm-specific IT experience. Likewise, contrary to popular perception, we do not find evidence for complementarities among an MBA education and IT experience. Among institutional effects, firms in IT and IT-intensive industries pay significantly more to IT professionals than other firms and dotcom firms also paid significant premium in 1999 and 2000. However, these firms do not value an MBA or firm-specific IT experience any more than other firms. We discuss the implications of these findings for further research, for firms' compensation practices, and for individual IT professionals.

Abstract: This paper develops a theoretical framework and empirically investigates physical distribution service (PDS) quality by Internet retailers in their transactions with consumers. An analysis of data that measure hundreds of electronic commerce transactions along with data at the firm level shows that higher shipping and handling charges are good indicators of better PDS quality. Other transaction-level conditions and firm-level attributes also affect PDS quality, as measured by availability, timeliness, and reliability. Most notably, when the net price of products transacted increases, PDS reliability and availability decline. Furthermore, Internet-retailer size is found to favor PDS availability whereas, surprisingly, newer Internet retailers exhibit a higher level of PDS availability than many of their incumbent competitors.

The Impact of Online Information on the Value of Quality Signals in Traditional Markets
Ramachandran, Vandana, Siva Viswanathan, David Eccles
Abstract: With the decentralization of information and the democratization of expertise brought about by the growth of the Web, consumers now have access to a plethora of information on various aspects of their purchase process. This study seeks to examine whether such decentralized online information substitutes or complements traditional centralized sources of information. Specifically, we examine how the increased access to online information alters the salience and value of conventional quality signaling mechanisms such as certification for consumers. We draw upon a unique and extensive dataset of consumers who obtained vehicle and transaction related information from online sources in their used vehicle purchase process to examine the impact of their information acquisition on the choice of certification, as well as the price paid. We compare the outcomes of sales across certified and non-certified used car purchases. Our findings highlight that product-related information substitutes, and price-related information complements, certification as indicated by their differential impacts on demand and price of certified used cars. We discuss the relevance of our findings for buyers and sellers and outline implications for online information providers as well.

Understanding the Motivations, Participation and Performance of Open Source Software Developers: A Longitudinal Study of the Apache Projects
Roberts, Jeff, Il-Horn Hann, Sandra SlaughterManagement Science Vol. 52, No. 7, July 2006, pp. 984-999
Abstract: Understanding what motivates participation is a central theme in the research on open source software (OSS) development. Our study contributes by revealing how the different motivations of OSS developers are interrelated, how these motivations influence participation leading to performance, and how past performance influences subsequent motivations. Drawing on theories of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, we develop a theoretical model relating the motivations, participation, and performance of OSS developers. We evaluate our model using survey and archival data collected from a longitudinal field study of software developers in the Apache projects. Our results reveal several important findings. First, we find that developers' motivations are not independent but rather are related in complex ways. Being paid to contribute to Apache projects is positively related to developers' status motivations but negatively related to their use value motivations. Perhaps surprisingly, we find no evidence of diminished intrinsic motivation in the presence of extrinsic motivations; rather, status motivations enhance intrinsic motivations. Second, we find that different motivations differentially impact participation. Developers' paid participation and status motivations lead to above average contribution levels, but use value motivations lead to below average contribution levels, and intrinsic motivations do not significantly impact the average contribution levels. Third, we find that developers' contribution levels positively impact their performance rankings. Finally, our results suggest that past performance rankings enhance developers' subsequent status motivations. We reconcile our findings with existing theories of motivation and studies of OSS and conclude with implications for managing OSS development communities.

Abstract: What differentiates successful from unsuccessful open source software (OSS) projects? This paper develops and tests a model of the impacts of license restrictiveness and organizational sponsorship on two indicators of success: user interest in, and development activity on, open source software development projects. Using data gathered from Freshmeat.net and project homepages, the main conclusions derived from the analysis are that (1) license restrictiveness and organizational sponsorship interact to influence user perceptions of the likely utility of OSS in such a way that users are most attracted to projects that are sponsored by non-market organizations and employ non-restrictive licenses and (2) licensing and sponsorship address complementary developer motivations such that the influence of licensing on development activity depends on what kind of organizational sponsor a project has. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed, and the paper outlines several avenues for future research.

The Impact of Ideology on Effectiveness in Open Source Software Development Teams
Stewart, Katherine, Sanjay GosainMIS Quarterly 2006
Abstract: The emerging work on understanding open source software has questioned what leads to effectiveness in OSS development teams in the absence of formal controls, and it has pointed to the importance of ideology. This paper develops a framework of the OSS community ideology (including specific norms, beliefs, and values) and a theoretical model to show how adherence to components of the ideology impacts effectiveness in OSS teams. The model is based on the idea that the tenets of the OSS ideology motivate behaviors that enhance cognitive trust and communication quality and encourage identification with the project team, which enhances affective trust. Trust and communication in turn impact OSS team effectiveness. The research considers two kinds of effectiveness in OSS teams, the attraction and retention of developer input and the generation of project outputs. Hypotheses regarding antecedents to each are developed. Hypotheses are tested using survey and objective data on OSS projects. Results support the main thesis that OSS team members' adherence to the tenets of the OSS community ideology impacts OSS team effectiveness and reveal that different components impact effectiveness in different ways. Of particular interest is the finding that adherence to some ideological components was beneficial to the effectiveness of the team in terms of attracting and retaining input, but detrimental to the output of the team. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
Categorizing Open Source Software Projects Based on Evolutionary Patterns
Stewart, Katherine, Sherae Daniel, David DarcyWorking Paper
Abstract: OSS is a growing phenomenon, representing an increasing amount of software engineering work. OSS projects represent new means of collaborating to build, distribute, and support software. Prior work on OSS has tended to focus on either the "big" projects such as Linux, Apache, etc, or on "the rest," such as the population (or a sample) of SourceForge. Very few have made distinctions among "the rest" (i.e., beyond dead and not dead, or better performing and worse performing). This study provides a finer-grained view of the landscape of OSS development projects as viewed through the lens of software evolution. In doing so, three main contributions are made to the literature. First, statistical analysis of longitudinal data is combined with qualitative analysis of data from projects' public websites to elaborate a categorization scheme that differentiates among 6 types of OSS projects. Second, in developing this categorization scheme, the work on software evolution is enhanced by identifying a set of projects in which aspects of complexity (size and structural complexity) move in different directions over time; in particular, a set of projects is described for which structural complexity decreases as size increases. The identification of this category of projects is unique in that most prior work has shown positive correlations between size and structural complexity. The third contribution of this study is methodological; the application of a new statistical technique, FDA, is demonstrated as useful in overcoming some of the challenges in studying software evolution.

An Ecological Perspective on Online Communities
Wang, Xiaoqing, Brian S. Butler
Abstract: Successful online communities such as YouTube, MySpace, Wikipedia and Open Source Software communities have raised much interest among practitioners. The practical potential of online communities and their unique characteristics as virtual organizations has motivated much research in describing, exploring, and explaining the nature and dynamics of online communities. However, most of the existing research has focused on characteristics of the individual member and the community under consideration, giving little attention to the larger context in which the community resides. This paper extends prior research by proposing an ecological perspective when studying community success, taking into account the extent of competition created by other communities in the same niche. Analysis of a longitudinal sample of 241 Usenet newsgroups over 64 months implies that both internal characteristics and external context affect communities' capability to retain members. Specifically, competition - the extent to which a community shares content with other communities and the extent to which the community's members also participate in other communities - represents an external threat that leads to a lower likelihood of members to return in the following time period.
The Cross-Purposes of Crossposting
Wang, Xiaoqing, Brian S. Butler
Abstract: Increasingly, online discussion communities are used to provide both the ability and context for technical talk. An important aspect of a sustainable online community is the content boundary which delineates which topics and types of discussion are considered to be part of the community. In this paper, we explain the challenges associated with boundary maintenance in these communities by examining the impact of boundary reshaping communication on internal participant dynamics and community responsiveness. On one hand, strong boundaries support the creation of a distinct community identity, promoting participation in competitive environments. On the other hand, impermeable boundaries limit the external visibility of community activity among individuals who are not regularly involved, potentially reducing the inflow of participants. We test hypotheses about these conflicting effects of boundaries using longitudinal data from the microsoft.public USENET newsgroups. Empirical results suggest that boundary integrity and external visibility have competing effects on participation levels. As the number of messages posted across community boundaries increases so does the number of participants, implying that external visibility increases participation. Conversely, groups with a higher proportion of shared messages have fewer subsequent participants, suggesting that lower boundary integrity decreases involvement. Taken together these effects highlight the dynamic tensions inherent in the social/technical development task that managers face as they support the ongoing operation of online technical discussion communities.
Relationship Between the Individual and the Group in Online Communities
Wang, Xiaoqing, Robert E. Kraut, Brian S. Butler, E. Joyce, Moira Burke
Abstract: Online communities are increasingly important for both businesses and the general public that use them. However, current IS research on online communities has a limited view of these online groups, treating them primarily as information repositories, where people participate by seeking or contributing knowledge. This paper argues that online communities are also social systems with which people form relationships and repeatedly interact over time. This paper proposes a relational model of online communities that emphasizes the social, bi-directional, and dynamic nature of the interactions in online communities and the way that these interactions build and maintain the relationship between individuals and the community. Hypotheses derived from the relational model are tested by examining the 22-month history of 28,869 newcomers who initially posted to 98 Usenet groups between May 15, 2003, and February 23, 2005. First, taking the newcomers' point of view, we examine how the community's response to their posts influences their subsequent participation in the community. Then, taking the community's point of view, we examine how the nature of individual members' participation in the community influences the community's willingness to interact with them. Consistent with the relational model, the results show that the social nature of interactions, including the social status of the repliers and the use of welcoming, inclusive language in community responses, facilitates the development of the relationship between newcomers and the community. Similarly, prior replying experience of the newcomers and their use of self-introductions in initial messages signaling connection to the group increase the community's willingness to maintain a relationship with them. The findings provide implications to online community researchers and practitioners interested in fostering member engagement. We suggest applying a relational model to study not only online communities, but also information systems that are increasingly social in nature.

Service Differentiation: Analysis of a Shared-Resource System
Yahav, Inbal, Itir Karaesmen, Louiqa Raschid
Abstract: Grid computing is the practice of allocating shared computational resources to a diversity of customers in an on demand fashion. In the last decade, Grid computational resources have been increasingly made use of by commercial corporate customers. The heterogeneity of customers' requirements can be characterized by the frequency of demand, the value associated with the service and delay sensitivity. This raises some unique challenges in both resource pricing and allocation of resources to customers. We address these challenges in this paper. In particular, we consider the following two classes of customers: frequent users (FU) and on demand users (OD). The FU agreement is a proxy for the current business model used by typical providers; all customers are guaranteed the service for a usage-based fee. Any delays are subject to penalties in FU. In the OD, service is guaranteed to be completed without any delay, but the service provider can accept/reject OD job requests with no penalties. We focus on the admissions control decision for the OD customers. We consider two different business models. In the first, the unit revenue for any OD customer is fixed; in the second, OD customers 'name-their-own-fee'. We show that the optimal admissions policy is threshold-based in either model. Using computational experiments, we test the effectiveness of these two business models under optimal and myopic policies.
